Meeting with DFAT to evaluate Australian aid to UNRWA

The Ambassador H.E. Izzat Abdulhadi and Counsellor Suheir Gideon recently met with the DFAT appointed independent evaluation team, to discuss the regular assessment of Australian aid to UNRWA. Led by independent evaluator Ms, Judith Robinson, the evaluation is a regular process conducted annually by DFAT to assist in prioritizing DFAT’s international financial assistance. The assessment was critical given the recent accusations of UNRWA staff being responsible for incitement against the State of Israel. A thorough investigation for these allegations has been conducted by a formal UNRWA committee. Furthermore, DFAT has confirmed that the evaluation is unrelated to these accusations and is a standard requirement. Ambassador Abdulhadi clarified the importance of the service provided by UNRWA, particularly in Gaza following the destruction of homes and essential infrastructure in 2014. Following the evaluation, it is expected that Australia will continue its financial support to UNRWA.
