Welcoming UN Security Council's statement of deep concern over Israeli Knesset's legislation against UNRWA
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine welcomes the statement issued by the UN Security Council expressing deep concerns over the legislation adopted by the Israeli "Knesset" against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), affirming that it’s a step in the right direction.
The Ministry holds in high regard the emphasis by the Security Council on the vital role of UNRWA in providing essential humanitarian assistance to Palestine refugees, and its affirmation that UNRWA remains the cornerstone of humanitarian response in Gaza, underscoring that no organization can replace the agency as no other entity possesses the capacity, expertise, and institutional fabric to replicate or substitute UNRWA in providing life-saving services to Palestine refugees.
The Ministry appreciates the affirmation by Security Council members that any suspension or interruption of UNRWA's work would have severe humanitarian consequences.
It stresses that the international community should shoulder it responsibility to compel Israel to stop targeting UNRWA, in fulfillment of their obligations under international law, including the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice and General Assembly Resolution (A/RES/ES-10/24).
The Ministry values the Security Council’s recognition of the efforts of UNRWA staff, who continue to fulfill their mandate under the most challenging circumstances and acknowledge the ongoing support from member states for UNRWA.
The Ministry reiterates its unwavering support for UNRWA, rooted in its steadfast commitment to upholding the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to return and to independence.
