Timore-Leste

Formal bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Palestine were established in 2004 and have been conducted through the General Delegation of Palestine to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific (GDOP).

Palestinian Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Izzat Abdulhadi visited Timor-Leste in 2015 to promote further cooperation between the two nations. President of Timor-Leste Vicente da Silva Guterres and Ambassador Abdulhadi discussed the current political situation in Occupied Palestine and strategies to promote Palestinian-Timorese bilateral and multilateral relations. Ambassador Abdulhadi also met with Secretary of State for ASEAN Affairs Roberto Soares, Acting Deputy Health Minister Dr Ana Isabel Soares and the leadership of the Ministry of Education. During these meetings the parties discussed an effective development cooperation program that would capitalise on Palestinian expertise in the medical and education sectors. All of the Timorese representatives expressed their strong support for the Palestinian right to self-determination in an independent state.

Timor-Leste has shown unwavering support for Palestine on the international stage. Timor-Leste both recognises the State of Palestine and voted in favour of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution that upgraded the status of Palestine to a Non-Member Observer State in 2012. Since becoming an independent state, Timor-Leste has consistently voted in favour of UNGA Resolutions that assert the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention to Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) (Table 7) and those that condemn the continued construction of Israeli settlements in OPT (Table 8). Palestine and Timor-Leste hope to continue cooperating to tackle the similar issues that they face as nations.
