Dr. Ashrawi: “The U.S. is finally coming to the realization that Israeli actions are no longer acceptable”

“For so long, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was provided with the full immunity to create havoc and to do so much damage on the ground at the expense of Palestinian lives, lands and resources, and as a result, he has destroyed the two-state solution. However, the U.S. is finally coming to the realization that Israeli actions are no longer acceptable.”

PLOExecutive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi made these comments during two separate meetings she conducted with a group of American medical students and familymedicine residents led by Dr. David McRay of the University of Tennessee-Nashville Family Medicine Residency Program and a large delegation of students from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy.

In both of her meetings, Dr. Ashrawi discussed the latest political developments, Israel’s stepped-up efforts of settlement expansion, violence and war crimes in the West Bank (including occupied East Jerusalem) and Gaza, the steps that must be adopted before the two-state solution is destroyed indefinitely and Palestinian efforts to hold Israel accountable at the ICC and other multinational organizations and agencies, the role of the U.S. and how both the Administration and Congress should undertake a new and more constructive approach to salvage the two-state solution and to safeguard Palestinian rights, the recent Israeli elections and Netanyahu’s fueling language and policies of racism, hatred and distrust, Israel’s campaign of aggression and terror in Gaza, and the need for Palestinian elections and sincere reconciliation.

Dr. Ashrawi also stressed, “It is time for the U.S. government to translate its statements into action and reconsider its unquestioning support of Israel and its military aid to Israel. In order for the military occupation to end, the U.S. cannot work alone; in accordance with international law and the global rule of law, it must cooperate with various members of the international community, including European countries and Arab nations.”
